An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped contraceptive device inserted into the uterus by a trained GP. It’s one of the most reliable forms of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) available in Australia, and can remain in place for several years depending on the type.
There are two main types of IUD available:
- Hormonal IUD — releases a small, steady amount of hormone (progestogen) and can also help reduce period pain and bleeding for some women.
- Copper IUD — hormone-free, and works using copper to prevent pregnancy.
Which option suits you depends on your individual health history, symptoms and preferences. Our GPs will talk you through the options at your consultation so you can make an informed decision together.
